Secondary School / Grammar School Teaching Certificates

Which level of education do you intend to teach at – secondary or grammar school?
Prior to embarking on your course, you must determine your career objective. The following two tracks are available:

  • Secondary school teaching, i.e., level I (= pupils attending compulsory secondary education upon completion of primary school, years 5-9). Your objective will then be a Secondary School Teaching Certificate (SLA);
  • Grammar school teaching, i.e., level II (= pupils attending non-compulsory advanced secondary education aimed at a baccalaureate). Your objective will then be a Grammar School Teaching Certificate (HLA)

Both teacher training courses comprise a specialist-academic and a career-specific track:

  • Students pursue the specialist-academic track at the University of Basel.
  • Career-specific training is undertaken at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland. Coursework builds knowledge and skills in Education Studies (Pedagogy, Psychology, General Didactics), Subject-specific Didactics, and teaching practice.
