Fossil chironomids: From the Pleistocene to the Anthropocene

International workshop on fossil chironomids in Basel, Switzerland August 29 - 31, 2022

Organizer: Oliver Heiri, University of Basel, Switzerland

We cordially invite fossil chironomid researchers to what may be the 14th international (chironomid) deadhead workshop in Basel Switzerland. The workshop will provide an opportunity to present recent results, as poster or oral presentation, discuss with colleagues, and examine interesting or unusual fossil chironomid specimens under the microscope. In addition, we intend to discuss two timely topics for fossil chironomid research: online archiving of chironomid count and reconstruction data and archiving of fossil chironomid microscope slides in repositories or museums. For the third day of the workshop we plan an excursion to the sites of some classical but also some very recent chironomid studies, depending on the weather with either a visit to the Grindelwald region, where many early Swiss chironomid studies were conducted, or if the weather is poor, to some Swiss lowland sites that were studied for fossil chironomids.

Accommodation will have to be organized by the participants individually. Basel is an international city with numerous hotels and hostels. Please see our hotel list (will be online soon) for some options or explore online services that provide links to accommodation. Basel also has a small camping that may be an option for those looking for low cost accommodation and are willing to camp. Finally, Basel is right at the border with Germany and France and hotels for example in St. Louis or Lörrach may also be an option. Please book well in advance, Basel also hosts international fairs and events which sometimes can lead to limited room availability.
